The Luigi Serra Scholarship fund - In Honor of Luigi Serra
Luigi Serra (Gigio), 79, of Chicago & Palm Desert, CA, passed away of Covid-19 on December 9 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with his wife Bonnie (Board Member) and sons, Sandro and Luca (Vice President), by his side.
Luigi was born in Mantova, Italy and raised in Florence, Italy. At 26 he moved to the US to marry his beloved Bonnie. He worked for 28 years at Sargent & Lundy as an electrical engineer specialized in the design of nuclear power plants. He retired from engineering in 1994 to pursue professional sports photography, primarily tennis, the sport he loved.
For the past 45 years, Luigi traveled the globe photographing tennis at Wimbledon, the US, French, & Australian Opens and countless other tournaments. He was a fixture at the BNP Paribas tournament at Indian Wells, CA, and was tennis editor of Desert Golf & Tennis magazine since 2013.
Luigi lived life to the fullest and went out of his way to make everyone he met feel valued. He was the life of the party and will be missed by many all over the world.
Luigi was the beloved husband of Bonnie for 53 years and the extremely proud father of Alessandro and Gianluca and grandchildren Isabella, Gabriella, Daniela, Lexi and Vincent. He is survived by his brother Roberto and sister Maria Luisa.
